Household waste down by 2.7%

Last Updated: 9 January 11

DEFRA have published the household recycling statistics for 2008/09. They show a 2.1% improvement in recycling rates. They also show a drop in waste collected of 2.7% suggesting that because the recycling tonnage is static and total waste is reduced that there is no change in real rates.

It is not clear why the total waste colelcted has fallen. Is it because there has been a real drop in waste produced, a dip caused by the recession OR is there more fly tipping going on?

Analysis of the figures locally shows that only 3 out …...of the 15 councils / authorities in West Yorkshire & manchester are above the national average, so lots of scope for improvement in our region.
